After more than five years of being in early access, Rimworld’s indie colony management sim Rimworld was officially launched in October 2018. However, Ludeon Studios, the developer, is still working on it. Today, the studio announced that an important, free update and a new expansion, called Ideology are on their way.
The 1.3 update represents 15 months of work and will include a new system for pens and fencing for animals, a reworked factional goodwill system and more powerful enemies that will use special tools to break your base defenses rather than trying to enter through the front door. It also includes medicine that colonists can carry and use, as well as medicine. Why do you need beards? Ludeon explained that beards are a common feature of men.
There are many other changes, additions, tweaks and fixes. The changelog provides the full details on all that is happening in the 1.3 update.
The Ideology update is the most important. It allows players to have more control over the narrative aspects and design of their colonies. Tynan Sylvester, the developer, said that it was a response to players creating colonies based upon certain “themes,” such as pirates, cannibals and nomads.
“I thought: What about a system that allowed players to express their different views of life? Sylvester said that this is what Sylvester and Ideology have been working on for the past 15 months.
This expansion allows you to create a new belief system, and then act it out in the colony. You can be tree-worshipping cannibals that carve skulls into furniture or blind tunnelers who avoid the light. Transhumanists are obsessed with creating the perfect human form by using exotic technology. You can also be nudists or drug-stupor mystics or piratical raiders or charity-focused givers or pain-loving animals sacrificers or dance-party techno ravers or rustic ranching cattleboys or many other roles.
You will be able mix and match elements from your belief system to create custom elements. The expansion will include a category of quests that can be described as “a kind of Indiana Jones roguelike-type problem,” new dryad creatures and spacedrone hacking, plus a new “Archonexus” ending.
Rimworld 1.3 is expected to be live in a few weeks. This would place it around mid-July. Ludeon however warned that this could change. You can try it right away by clicking on RimWorld from your Steam library. Click “Properties” and then choose the “Betas tab. Finally, select branch “1.3-preview”. To complete the process, you may need to restart Steam.
