Watch a badass cinematic for the new Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team

The skirmish-scale Kill Team spin-off is a great alternative if you are looking to get into tabletop Warhammer 40K but don’t want to spend the time to build and paint an entire army. Kill Team will be getting a revamp with new rules and a brand new boxed set, as shown in the action-packed trailer and discussed in the Warhammer Preview livestream.
Kill Team: Octarius comes with plastic miniatures of the two squads that you can see murdering each other in the trailer. These are the Death Korps of Krieg (Imperial veterans wearing gas masks) or Ork Kommandos (ork experts who are a bit more sneaky than usual) as well terrain representing ork ruin. It also includes a gameboard measuring 30 by 22 inches, dice, combat gauges, tokens, 54 tactical operations cards, and two rules books.

The details of how the rules will change are still to be determined. Kill Team is expected to move away from Warhammer 40k’s rules and closer towards Age of Sigmar Warcry (though it may not be as simple).

This box is tied to the Octarius setting in Warhammer 40,000’s next campaign book. It will describe a war between an ork empire that has ruled the sector for millennia, and a tyranid hive navy diverted there by a rogue Intelligitor. The conflict could spread to the rest of the galaxy so the Imperium gets involved in an effort to stop it. The prospect of a good biff is attracting more orks, and new models are in the works for their huge beasts. I like the one that looks like an landshark.

It will be interesting to see how the next campaign storyline is reflected in videogames. There is precedent: Battlefleet Gothic 2 dealt with the Fall of Cadia. The forthcoming strategy game Battlesector will be set after the Devastation of Baal. Darktide, the co-op shooter, will likely tie in to current events in the larger 40K setting.

Pre-order the Kill Team: Octarius box set in August. Stocks are limited so order now. You can purchase the entire box if you are an existing 40K player and just want the miniatures.
