  • Grand Theft Auto London 1961
  • Grand Theft Auto Advance

The original Grand Theft Auto was released in 1997. It was an experiment, mixing genres and giving players the freedom to tackle any mission they wanted. DMA was inspired by the success of the original GTA to create expansion packs GTA 1969 for the PlayStation 1 and GTA 1961 for the PC. The unique thing about the GTA original was that players could choose who they wanted as their character. There are many protagonists available to choose from. This was the first time Grand Theft Auto offered a female protagonist.

The original Grand Theft Auto was considered in the 2D universe. The 2D Grand Theft Auto Advance is considered in 3D. GTA Advance is a year before the events of GTA 3. It takes place in a more sanitized version of Liberty City. GTA Advance was originally intended to be a port for GTA 3, but this was changed due to the effort required to port all missions onto the console. GTA Advance featured many of the core mechanics found in the first two GTA titles, as well as some new mechanics like Vigilante missions. It was released after San Andreas but the limitations of the hardware made it feel as though a lot of steps had been taken backward.

C Tier

  • Grand Theft Auto – Chinatown Wars
  • Grand Theft Auto II

Grand Theft Auto continued to follow the Grand Theft Auto trend for handheld consoles, first on the Nintendo DS, and then shortly after on the PlayStation Portable. GTA was a huge success, unlike its GTA Advance predecessor. It was praised for its innovative use of the touch screen on the Nintendo DS. The game had the traditional top-down view from GTAtitles but players could move the camera around dynamically while playing. This was a great addition, as GTA: Chinatown Wars was also played in Liberty City’s fully 3D world.

Grand Theft Auto 2 is very similar to the original GTA. This makes sense considering that the expansions for GTA 2 were only months away. Grand Theft Auto 2 didn’t make any improvements to the core gameplay design, which ultimately hurt its rating. GTA2 had a PC port with multiplayer up to 6 players and later a port to the Game Boy Color, which was cut down because of hardware limitations. One of the unique features of GTA2 was the inclusion of cutscenes from a live-action short that was intended to set the tone for the gameplay.

B Tier

  • Grand Theft Auto 3
  • Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories

Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first time the franchise entered the 3D world. It took place in a reimagined Liberty City. Although Liberty City would be reinvented many times, this was the first time fans saw it from the street and not from a bird’s-eye view. Many creative changes were made as a result of the shift from 2D into 3D. This changed how Grand Theft Auto would be played forever. It featured a fully voiced cast and a revamped combat system and driving system. The story was also richer. GTA 3 was praised for its revolutionary game design winning multiple awards, despite the game’s violent portrayal.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is very similar to GTA: Episodes From Liberty City in that they are side stories that take place in the main game’s city. GTA: Liberty City Stories is set in GTA 3’s Liberty City. It features a new storyline and multiplayer. Vice City Stories includes a new story set in a revisited Vice City and new features like the ability to bribe hospital staff and police to keep weapons if they are stolen or destroyed. Empire Building is a major addition that allows players to take over properties from rival gangs.
