MeleeHighlighted modding scenes that add fan favorites or obscure characters to the game.MeleeModders are still adding new characters to the roster. Cloud Strife, the popular slasher game, is one example. Final Fantasy 7.

Cloud Strife was only a pipedream back in 2001 when the mainline console Final Fantasy titles were being released on the PlayStation. This was Nintendo’s competition. Even though Final Fantasy 7 was a huge hit and made the series popular, there was a lot of demand for Cloud to be a part of the Smash Bros. roster. The series’ first Final Fantasy player was not until the Super Smash Bros. 3DS or Wii U DLC. Cloud has been a popular choice among the playable cast, so much so that one fan modified him to the Super Smash Bros. Melee roster.

GhostsPumpkinSoup is a prominent member of the Smash Bros. modding group. He said that the backport of Cloud from Ultimate-to-Melee required a lot of work and the assistance of other modders to create the model. Cloud looks exactly like the Final Fantasy 7 models that were used as the basis of his design. Although he appears to have been cloned using Marth, the first preview footage also shows how Cloud’s Smash Ultimate techniques were ported into Melee with appropriate visuals.

Early footage can be seen here. However, many of the features like Cloud’s Limit Break Specials and hitboxes are retained from Ultimate. GhostsPumpkinSoup stated that everything would be modified and altered to match Cloud’s competitive context. This includes the elimination of certain mechanics such as Cloud’s Limit gauge. To demonstrate that such mechanics are possible, he included them in the preview.

Even though Smash Ultimate is a huge success, mods such as these are a sign that Melee’s fans have a long history of love. Fans of this game in particular are still adding characters into the game, such as when one modder added Wolf as a playable character. It will be thrilling to see Cloud complete, as well as any other playable fighters that come to Melee.
