Discord’s Stage Channels, a new addition to its chat software, are a great addition. Normal Discord voice channels allow anyone to speak. Stage Channels make it easier for mods to designate speakers and invite audience members to participate in panels or Q&As. They are similar to Twitter Spaces, which Silicon Valley people love. And they’re staying around for new features like event scheduling. Stage Discovery, which showcases active Stage Channels across Discord’s vast network, is a Discord feature that isn’t staying around.
Stage Discovery will be closing on October 4 because of discord.
In a blog post, the company stated that it had learned from community members and administrators that there is still work to be done in relation to server moderation and onboarding. “… We’re going to spend some time rethinking Stages’ Discovery component and looking at ways to make Stages a more useful place for people to connect to the most relevant communities.
This is the key. It’s easy to see why Stage Discovery is closing. These are the Stage Channels that it is currently showing me:
DEBATE: God doesn’t exist
Are there more than two genders?
SPEED DATING (anyone is allowed to participate) (PG-13
Confess your secrets
This makes it quite obvious why Discord decided to reexamine the issue of surfacing information from other people’s servers.
Reddit user ElP4drino said that Stage Discovery was being dropped, “Thank God, it was a useless add-on.” “Just filled up with every talent show known and a bunch questionable debate topics.”
This is also my experience.
Discord told me that it does not proactively monitor the activity of people in its servers. Discord agents won’t come knocking at your door with mod badges if you or your friends have inappropriate discussions. The company doesn’t monitor millions of voice channels in order to ensure everyone is being cool.
If you take what a group of teens and young adults are talking about on the wilds of 1,000-30,000-person servers, and give it to a Rocket League player in his 30s who uses Discord for communication with friends about the weather, you’re unlikely find a good match. At worst, Stage Discovery can cause dismay, anger, or even physical harm to people through the conversations it generates. Discord has decided to put the idea on hold.
I was still curious about the Discord feature’s future and decided to enter Memepalooza2. It seemed like Stage Channel, where I was less likely to hear something that I would regret. Although the discussion was difficult to follow, it was clear that it was about NFTs. It was obvious that it would have been.
Discord reminds me of my youth in Yahoo! unmoderated Yahoo! chat rooms, despite all the technological advances and cryptolords. Chat rooms from the late ’90s to early ’00s. There is one other major difference between now and then: people don’t use “_” as often anymore.
Today’s Discord blog post will provide more information about Stage Discovery’s decision to discontinue. A few new Discord features are also mentioned by the company, including more screening functionality that will allow you to get the right people into your community quickly and securely.
