This footage from Ride 4 looks so realistic it fooled the internet

Video game studios have always found it convenient to showcase their incredibly detailed graphics in big-budget racing games. It’s hard not to love the sound of the South American sun bouncing off your spoiler or the ripples in a tire. A Ride 4 clip has gone viral. It looks real enough to fool people into thinking it’s real race footage.
This footage shows a first-person perspective of a motorcycle racer racing through the streets of what appears to be the UK.

It’s funny to note that Milestone, a game developer, released Ride 4 back in October 2020. Four months later, a PS5 and Xbox Series X update were released in January 2021. The original video was taken at 4K at 60fps. It appears that it came from JoyOfGaming. It’s only when you reduce the video resolution to 480p, 360p, and 30fps, that the video starts to look more like random racing footage found on the internet. This adds to the creepy realism. It still looks amazing with the graphics turned up. But, there is something to be said about how lower resolutions and digital artefacts caused by all the reuploaded and copied versions of the video can make our eyes believe that we are watching real footage.

Many people in the videogame industry, including developers, took to Twitter to voice their disbelief at how a game could look so convincing.

Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War designer and former Boss Key director, is here.

Michele Caletti, Ride 4’s executive producer, stated that this footage was taken from the replay mode of the game, which adds some head bobble camera effects to the gameplay. This is not ideal.

Caletti explained that Ride 4 passed a “reality detection threshold” by adding the lighting and rainy weather. It wouldn’t work if you removed one ingredient.

Ride 4 is now available on Steam if you’re interested in giving it a try. Milestone also produces the MotoGP, Monster Energy Supercross and MXGP series. They just released Hot Wheels Unleashed which was a huge success.
