According to the U.S. Social Security Administration data, there was a rise in the number of children named after Marvel Cinematic Universe characters born between 2020 and 2022. More children were named after villains and heroes like Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Valkyrie, Tessa Thompson, and Thanos (Josh Brolin). There has been an increase in the number of children named after Marvel characters compared to the previous year. This is a time of great popularity for Marvel films, which have performed amazingly well at the box office despite changing industry landscapes.
Marvel Cinematic Universe is still one of the most beloved franchises in the entire world. Each new movie in theaters and on Disney+ is a hot topic and takes the world by storm even after Avengers: Endgame’s record-breaking box office. Many children born have been named after characters from the MCU over the years. 2020 saw new Marvel-inspired characters join the list of baby names.

According to Huffington Post data from the U.S. Social Security Administration, there has been an increase in the number of children named after Marvel characters. The Administration keeps records of names that more than five children have. One hundred thirty-five children were named Loki, and 128 were named Valkyrie, increasing 75 children in 2017. Even Thanos was a popular name for babies, with 18 children named after him in 2019, following his roles as a supervillain in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Avengers: Infinity War. However, the number of Thanos-named children decreased by 4% in 2020. There are also nine children named Bucky after Marvel characters and 47 children named Quill after Star-Lord and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

Popular culture-inspired baby names are a growing trend. More parents are taking inspiration from media that is important to them when naming their kids. Kylo was the fastest-rising boy’s name in 2016, with parents drawing inspiration from Ben Solo (Adam Driver), the Dark Side character in Star Wars. The ONS in the U.K. reported that 189 children named Kylo by 2020, surpassing those with traditional names like Gary and Nigel. However, more pop culture-inspired names have outperformed more conventional names over the years.

Over its 13-year history, many have grown up with the franchise, being inspired and brought together by its characters and forming bonds by watching these films. Strange casts a dangerous spell to forget Peter is Spider-Man and ignores Wong’s warning (Benedict Wong). Everything goes wrong, as expected. The video ends with Spider-Man 2’s Alfred Molina returning as Doctor Octopus. Many fans speculate that other Sony villains may appear alongside their Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, nothing beyond the early footage has been confirmed.
