Overwatch: Cole Cassidy Is The Cowboy Character’s New Name

Officially, the Overwatch character McCree, formerly known under the name McCree, will be renamed, Cole Cassidy. Activision Blizzard had previously confirmed that McCree would be renamed, but details of the new name have remained secret until now. The character was previously named after Jesse McCree (a former employee of Blizzard), who has since resigned amid ongoing controversy.
Activision Blizzard was sued by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing for harassment and abuse of employees. Many employees have complained about the toxic work environment since the original lawsuit. Jesse McCree was an associate of Alex Afrasiabi (another Blizzard employee named in the lawsuit), who has since left the company. Overwatch halted story content featuring the cowboy to make way for the McCree name.
Official Overwatch confirmed the identity of the character as Cole Cassidy in a tweet. Cole Cassidy was the character’s birth name, and McCree was his alias until now. After the official switchover, McCree’s name will no longer appear in Overwatch. There will be no other changes to McCree’s personality or appearance at that point.

Activision Blizzard has been experiencing a lot of activity, including many employee departures. It is still dealing with the consequences of its employees’ hostile environment, months after the initial allegations were made against the company. Activision Blizzard made other content changes in recent months, including Cole Cassidy’s name change. World of Warcraft also removed similar references and continues to make changes. It remains to be seen if the company can shed its reputation.

Although the name change to Cole Cassidy is symbolic, it is indicative of the ongoing work Activision Blizzard is doing to improve its public image. While time will show how successful these efforts are, legal problems surrounding Activision Blizzard remain complex. The California Department of Fair Employment & Housing raised objections to Blizzard’s settlement with EEOC earlier this month, citing possible damages to its lawsuit. While Cole Cassidy’s name changes in Overwatch may be reassuring to some players, there is still much legal work to do.

Activision Blizzard did not respond to the court docket concerning the civil suit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing on July 20, 2018. The civil suit alleges discrimination and harassment at the company. Activision Blizzard’s counsel may be preparing to answer the court. However, there has been a lot of internal communication and public information from the company. Those following the suit might be confused by these mixed messages.

While some messages from Activision Blizzard employees and past staff have acknowledged company culture problems and made a commitment to rectify them, others deny the legitimacy of the lawsuit. One statement went so far as to call it irresponsible manipulations by state bureaucrats. Understanding the competing interests of large companies may help to clarify conflicting tones. Activision Blizzard’s legal and publication relations departments might have different priorities. The messages it sends to employees, investors, and the general public may also be affected.

Screen Rant received a response from Activision Blizzard shortly after the news broke about the lawsuit. It was identical to one that had been sent to multiple media outlets. The response stated that “The DHEF contains distorted and, in many cases, false descriptions of Blizzard’s past.” The state agency also claimed that it “rushed to file an incorrect complaint, which we will prove in court.” This language is consistent with Activision Blizzard’s assumed priorities – to protect the company against liability. A company that presents a confident face can give it more leverage when negotiating an out-of-court settlement.
