Legacies Are Doomed To Repeat The Worst Mistake From Seasons 2 & 3
Legacies Season 4 is at risk of repeating the mistakes made in seasons 2 and 3. This was what made Legacies feel less like The Vampire Diaries. In 2018, The Vampire Diaries, the show’s debut, was a lighter series than its predecessor and its first spinoff, The Originals. The series was set at the Salvatore School for the Young & Gifted. Legacies‘ campy humor and “monsters of the week” plotting made it less addictive to watch The Vampire Diaries.
This tonal shift made Legacies the zaniest addition to The Vampire Diaries universe, but many long-term viewers didn’t like the lighter approach. Legacies focus more on love triangles than on the character arcs of Vampire Diaries and rarely kill off major characters, as opposed to the earlier series. This made Legacies less appealing to audiences than The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. The series is currently working on fixing this problem in season 4.
Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), becoming the Tribrid (Matthew Davis), cemented this tonal shift and confirmed that the spinoff will now be a darker series with real stakes beyond teenage romances. The show could be saved if Legacies became more like The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. This is made more frustrating by season 4, episode 7, “Someplace Far Away From all This Violence,” which seems to reverse this trend. After she attacked Alaric, Hope put distance between herself and the rest of her cast. She then opened the Legacies world to more than just the Salvatore School. The promo for “Someplace Far Away From all This Violence” shows Hope just showing up at school. This is not a good sign since Legacies seems determined to keep its drama small-scale, just as Legacies had begun to excel at larger, more meaningful plots.
After Hope’s years as a morally strong heroine, it is not surprising that the Vampire Diaries borrowed plot of Hope becoming a cold-blooded killer isn’t clear where the writers want to take her. Fans of earlier series will recognize Hope’s transformation. It makes sense that legacies don’t want to drag her out too long. However, having Hope decide to return to Salvatore School on her own allows her friends to track her down. Legacies season 4 episode 6 showed the other characters using a simulation to show that Tribrid Hope could make quick work of the Super Squad. It’s worth considering, especially as Hope is the character with the lowest level of dynamic character development in the series.
Hope’s apparent evil is also exaggerated when she is willing to go back to school and talk to her friends in civil terms. Legacies Season 4 seemed to bring back Vampire Diaries‘ darker edge, significant stakes, so it isn’t very pleasant to see the show reverse this promising development. Even though Hope is back in place, the plot will continue to get darker. However, for now, it may be disconcerting to see the villainess with her schoolmates once again.
