Awesome Games Done Quick, a week-long speedrunapalooza, kicks off this weekend. The opening day features high-speed blasts through games such as Deathloop, Death’s Door, and Dead Space. That’s quite a few Ds!
Games Done Quick is an annual celebration of speedruns, which are the art of completing a game as quickly as possible. Any game is acceptable. This year’s AGDQ features The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion and Stardew Valley as well as I Am Bread and Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R. Runs can be restricted by rules, such as a requirement to achieve certain achievements or the ability to use glitches. The bottom line is: get from Point A to Point B quickly.
This video shows how speedrunners use systems and strangeness to get to where they need to be in a hurry.
Speedrunning is an extremely passionate and knowledgeable sport. The whole event is great fun. It’s a great thrill to see speedrunners do these feats, especially when trying to break a record. It’s not just a show. Awesome Games Done Quick is also an event to raise funds for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It has been very successful. The event raised more than $2.7million through 42,000 donations last year.
This year’s PC-centric highlights include Deathloop, which was last year’s most played game; Antichamber, an “austerely intelligent” indie puzzler; The Typing of the Dead. I’m curious about this because I don’t know how to speedrun a typing game. It Takes Two because you can’t add pressure like a partner. And Sekiro Shadows Die Twice because it’s a blindfolded speedrun, literally, a run of the game with a blindfold.
This won’t be the first blindfolded race or the first game. The Summer Games Done Quick 2021 event had two speedruns with blindfolds for Trackmania Nations Forever (and Super Mario 64).
Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 will again be exclusively held online. A preshow will kick off at 8:30 PT/11:30 ET on January 9. Gamesdonequick.com has the complete speedrun schedule.
