DEAD BY DARK DAYLIGHT DROPS LEATHERFACE MASKS RACIST DROPS
Unlockable masks in the game after reports of racism. These changes will be implemented in the Mid-Chapter update. The Player Test Build was completed on Wednesday, 5 January.
In 2017, the game introduced the Cannibal (or Leatherface as better known) from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film series. Players are assigned to hunt down four survivors to escape the game arena in the 4vs1 Asymmetrical Horror title.
However, the Leatherface DLC was met with controversy when it was revealed that Killer would include unlockable cosmetics to help you complete in-game challenges. The Cannibal could gain the ability to use a mask that is based on the appearance of each of the four original survivors by sacrificing them 25 times. This seemed like an obvious addition to the game, as Leatherface is seen in the skins of his victims in the films that he is based on.
Claudette Mostel and Jake Park are both people of colour. They are a Black woman and a Korean male. Many players criticized cosmetics for being a form of blackface. The Morel mask was a particular target of criticism. This situation was made worse because many Black players claimed that the mask was being used to harass them in racist ways.
Behaviour Interactive (Dead by Daylight’s designer) has now announced that the feature would be removed completely from the game.
They wrote that community members had shared their experiences with people harassing and targeting them using masks. They continued with, “These reports were disheartening, and we condemn such behaviour.” When these masks are being used to spread hatred, we aren’t comfortable with them being in the game.”
The group concluded their discussion by stating that they would not tolerate hateful behaviour and would continue to take all steps necessary to protect the community.
The Mid-Chapter update includes many other changes, including the removal of masks. The Mid-Chapter update includes perk updates, a betas tab that allows console players to test content, and a revision of the Grade reward system. The developers also shared information about their long-term plans for the game.
