Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 Script Was Completely Done

James Vanderbilt claims that the script for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man4 was completed before the project was canceled in 2010. Tobey Maguire was the star of Raimi’s live-action Spider-Man movie. It was released in theaters 20 years ago. This film forever changed superhero cinema. Raimi directed Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2006) before Sony dropped plans to make Spider-Man 4 and instead rebooted the franchise with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). Starring Andrew Garfield, Raimi was also a director. After The Amazing Spider-Man, 2 (2014), Sony and Disney/Marvel Studios agreed to cast Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU. Fans still wonder about what could have been.

Spider-Man 3 was undoubtedly inferior to Spider-Man 2. However, Sony’s impressive box-office numbers convinced them to make a fourth movie. Raimi saw this as an opportunity for Raimi to rectify the mistakes of the third film. Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was developed in 2008. Everyone from Maguire to Kirsten Dust to J.K. Simmons was set to return. Its script was rewritten multiple times because of a series of narrative issues that ultimately led Sony to cancel Spider-Man4 in favor of The Amazing Spider-Man.

In an exclusive interview for Scream, Vanderbilt–who was involved in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel–discussed Spider-Man 4. According to the writer the script for Raimi’s fourth Spider-Man movie was complete before it was cancelled. Below is what he had to say about it.

“Yeah, Spider-Man 4, they had a complete script ready to go. And, as it is when you’re a feature writer, they brought in other great writers to help them finish it off. They made some changes, but about a year later, they came to the point — I don’t remember why — where they realized that this wasn’t the path they wanted to take.

Much of the film’s core story has been revealed in the years that Spider-Man IV was abandoned. The movie would have continued Spider-Man3’s storyline and seen Peter and Mary Jane attempt to reconcile their relationship while also dealing with Harry Osborn’s (James Franco) death. According to reports, Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard, with Dylan Baker reprising his role in the previous films. Concept art also shows that the film featured classic Spider-Man characters like Shocker, Rhino, and Mysterio. Raimi and the studio weren’t confident that this juggling of plotlines and characters would make the same mistakes as Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man – No Way Homesaw Maguire, Garfield, and Peter Parker return to their web-slinging roles. This brings together three generations of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. It is not difficult to see No way home, leaving the door open for Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 4. The ending of the film effectively ends all three Spider-Man timelines. Fans could now see Maguire’s and Garfield’s characters once more. Raimi will return to the Spider-Man genre with Doctor Strange. This movie is expected to feature various multiversal characters, including Maguire’s Spider-Man.
